James Island County Park
Located off Riverland Drive, James Island County Park is packed with outdoor fun for adults, kids, and even your dogs. Admission is just $2 per person, and children under 2 get in free. For dog owners, the park features large fenced-in areas for both large and small dogs, with lake access, water fountains, and a dog wash station for rinsing off after a day of play. Want to bring the kids? James Island County Park has a playground, a splash zone water park, a climbing wall, and 4 miles of paved trails for biking or walking. Plus, you can rent kayaks, bikes, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats. Depending on the activity, rental rates range from $5 to $15 per hour.
West Ashley Greenway
The West Ashley Greenway is a rail trail stretching from West Ashley to Johns Island. It's perfect for a slow walk, a refreshing run, or a scenic bike ride with Lowcountry views along the way. The trail is about 15.7 miles long and takes you along marshes, wetlands, and open fields, which is great for watching wildlife. The trail is considered to be easy and great for anyone looking to get out and enjoy the fresh air without too much effort. The trail is kid-friendly, dog-friendly, and stroller and wheelchair accessible, so everyone can join in on the fun.
Cypress Gardens
This one is located further outside Charleston, in Moncks Corner, but the peaceful scenery makes the 30-minute drive worth it. You may recognize spots from popular movies like The Notebook, The Patriot, or Cold Mountain. Admission is $10 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and military, $5 for kids 6–17, and free for children 5 and under. It's open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the last admission at 4 PM. The garden features 4.5 miles of walking trails, a Butterfly House, an Aviary, and a Swamparium filled with native reptiles and amphibians. You can also find yourself on guided and self-guided boat tours where you can spot alligators, birds, turtles, lily pads, and other swamp life and spot the famous Notebook scene. Full of amazing opportunities, Cypress Gardens is perfect for a romantic date or a fun-filled, educational day with the family.
